I decided this week to redo our entry door table. I got this table as a present for my birthday the first year we were married from my sweet in-laws. I love the lines of the table, and I really love painted furniture distressed just slightly to give it a more casual, cottage look. Here is how it turned out.
And here it is before.
To start this project off, I sanded down the piece and wiped down the debris with a wet rag before I sprayed on the primer.
I primed it with Zinsser Cover Stain which made a huge difference before I painted. The Rust-Oleum clear enamel was to seal everything after I painted and distressed.
I used Behr's Pot of Cream paint in a satin finish, and then distressed the edges with a little sandpaper. One tip I learned is to rub your edges that you want to sand with a candle before you prime and paint. The wax makes it really easy to sand the paint when distressing.
It turned out pretty cute.

I have some casual, cottage looking furniture that is painted with the distressed look. I would like for it to have a finished, polished look. Would reversing these steps work for me?
ReplyDeleteI would first start with a paint stripper and scrap off as much of the paint as possible. Then use a small electric sander to smooth the piece before applying the stain. It should give your furniture the polished look your wanting.
ReplyDeleteSo cute, Mary Beth! Love your blog!
